HEY THERE, GORGEOUS.
When I think about art, it’s not without a slight tinge of regret. Art was my first love. Truly deeply madly head over heels kinda love. It’s the thing that has always been there for me which I guess is why I often take it for granted. Like an unappreciated girlfriend that loves you no matter how bad you screw up.
That’s no way to treat a lady.
I’d like to say I’ve changed and that it won’t happen again but hey, I don’t have all the answers. Sure we’ve had some rough patches, but our time together hasn’t been all bad. Right now it’s 2am and I’m gonna spend some time getting reacquainted. Hey there, gorgeous. Remember me?

HI, I’M MECHAHATECHIMP
My name is Joel Carlo but you may know me by my artist moniker, MechaHateChimp. I’ve been a freelance artist and media developer for close to 20 years and my work has been published in several art magazines including ImagineFX and 2DArtist.
I have an “on again, off again” relationship with art because at the end of the day, I’m a bit of a soul searcher and don’t like to be tied down (at least that’s what I like to tell myself). That’s why I decided to put this blog together as a way to keep a record of the work I’ve done over the years and for posterity’s sake. I’m hoping it will be a source of inspiration for me whenever I’m too lazy to motivate myself but I won’t hold my breath. Regardless, I hope you can take something from it or at the very least enjoy my nonsensical rants.

La Ganza De Hicaro
The idea for "La Ganza De Hicaro" came about as an influence from one of my favorite painters, Michael Parkes. Parkes is an amazing artist and his work is not only riddled with surrealism, but winged objects among other things. I took some of the elements which are normally consistent in his artwork and applied them to this piece, the result being what you see here. Oil on board, 1998.
Daedalus
Yet another painting based on Greek mythology. "Daedalus" is based on the Greek character Daedalus from the story of Icarus. Daedalus was father to Icarus and the man responsible for creating the wings Icarus used when he flew too close to the sun. A sizable sum of my work has maintained a theme consisting of wings or things closely related to flying, and I attribute alot of it to my affinity for this myth. Mixed media on board, 1999.
Confrontation at Percé Rock
With the exception of commissioned work, the majority of my illustrations have always been created out of pure whim. In this case, "Confrontation at Percé Rock" came about from a strange dream in which an acquaintance of mine dreamt she stood staring into a pool filled with liquid gold. At the time I had been reading about some of the wildlife in the Gaspe Peninsula located in Canada, specifically near Percé Rock. The small birds you see in the picture are a species of birds called Razorbills which are indigenous to the area, and decided to paint them for no other reason than they looked cool. Acrylic on board, 1999.
Farnese Hercules
This is a study of the Farnese Hercules done with oil on illustration board, circa 1995. I don't remember exactly where I got the reference but I do remember that I was working from a very small photo.

NEED SOMETHING?
I’m currently available for commissions so if you need artwork, send me a quick message. Keep in mind that I run a fairly busy schedule but I always reply back as quickly as possible. If you don’t hear back from me right away, please be patient.
